A new study has shown that men who took Viagra over a longer period of time and had fewer side effects may be able to safely get Viagra back.
The study was presented at the annual meeting of the American Society for Sexual Medicine in September 2015.
The study, which was funded by Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFEI), will look at nearly 200 men who took Viagra, but their sexual function returned to normal after four weeks of taking Viagra.
The men were followed up at four weeks and found that they were able to get the drug back after four weeks.
The researchers reported they have no evidence to suggest that men who took Viagra over the course of a longer period of time may be able to safely get Viagra back.
Viagra, also known as sildenafil, is a drug that helps men with erectile dysfunction. It belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. These drugs work by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, allowing increased blood flow when sexually aroused.
Viagra is the brand name for sildenafil. Viagra was originally developed to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension but is now also approved to treat erectile dysfunction. It’s taken as needed for several weeks to help men achieve and maintain an erection.
The Viagra researchers said they hope that the results of their study will be published in the journal,Human Viagra Research.
Researchers are also studying whether men with erectile dysfunction may be able to regain control of their sexual ability after taking the drug.
“In this study, we are examining the effects of taking Viagra on the ability of these men to have an erection,” said first author Dr. Steven Nissen, a pharmaceutical company’s head of sexual medicine.
“We are not suggesting that Viagra will help restore the ability of those who have been struggling with impotence. Instead, we are suggesting that Viagra may help men who have had the problem and regain their ability to have an erection,” Dr. Nissen added.
Dr. Nissen is the medical director of the Sexual Medicine Clinic in New York.
“As a physician and a member of the International Society for the Study of Sexual Medicine, I always wanted to see what the results would be. It wasn’t an unexpected surprise,” he said.
The researchers also said their results may not be seen by everyone, particularly men who have had erectile dysfunction, as the number of men who developed side effects during the four-week treatment period was not statistically significant.
Steven Nissen, a Pfizer medical director, and his team will continue to monitor the progress of their study.
“Our hope is that our results will not only be used as a tool for the health care industry but will also assist in preventing the return of erectile dysfunction and in the long-term treatment of this condition,” Dr. Nissen said.
