New research shows that men taking the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra have less sex at all.
Researchers at New York University School of Medicine and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas found that those taking the drug — also known as the “little blue pill” — were more likely to suffer from premature ejaculation.
And while the results were promising, the drug’s side effects are not the only worry.
“I don’t think it’s safe or effective for most men,” said Dr. Steven Nissen, a urologist and assistant professor at New York’s St. Luke’s Medical School. “Viagra is a very safe and effective drug.”
Viagra and the other erectile dysfunction drugs also have the potential to affect brain chemistry, he said.
“Our results indicate that Viagra will increase the amount of serotonin in the brain, and that could be a key cause of premature ejaculation,” Nissen said.
But the study doesn’t test the drug’s efficacy in men with ED, he said.
“The drug is safe and effective in men with ED,” Nissen said. “We know that it may have other benefits, and it’s important to use this therapy with caution.”
Some men take the drug just for the little blue pill. Nissen said other medications, such as Viagra, could affect how Viagra works.
Nissen said some men may be taking other drugs to treat other conditions. He said he hasn’t had problems with the drug himself.
“It’s not as bad as the Viagra,” Nissen said.
But it’s important to note that men taking other medications, including blood pressure drugs, may be more susceptible to side effects.
The research, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, does not prove that Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs work for all men.
But Nissen said men who take Viagra and other ED medications can experience less sex at work.
“We know that, on average, men who take the Viagra tend to be less sexually active,” Nissen said.
For that reason, it’s important for doctors to monitor men who take the medication regularly.
Nissen said he’s also concerned about the effects of the drug on a woman’s sex life. But for men taking other medications, including blood pressure drugs and testosterone, Nissen said there are other ways to treat the side effects.
“If a man has trouble getting or keeping an erection, the doctor may recommend taking an alpha-blocker,” Nissen said. “That’s what the ED drug is for.”
While the study wasn’t definitive, Nissen said his research is still being done. He also wasn’t surprised that Viagra and other ED drugs have a lower chance of causing problems for women.
“I’m not surprised that a little blue pill, like Viagra, can cause problems for women,” Nissen said.
In fact, the study found that men taking the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra — which is sold under the brand name Revatio — were more likely to suffer from problems.
“I think what they found is that men who take Viagra, they tend to get less sex at work,” Nissen said.
In addition, men who take erectile dysfunction drugs for two or more years can have problems that can last for a month or two.
A study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that men who took the drug for two or more years were more likely to experience sexual dysfunction.
Nissen said doctors need to be cautious when prescribing Viagra or other ED drugs.

A new report,The New York Timesreports that a US Food and Drug Administration advisory panel has concluded that Pfizer’s Viagra is the most likely to cause erectile dysfunction. The FDA says it is not aware of any reports of serious risks. Pfizer’s Viagra is the only impotence drug approved by the FDA to treat male impotence.
The FDA does not recommend that men who are not taking any of the erectile dysfunction drugs be given a second or third erection only pill. The FDA says men who have erection problems must take Viagra if they are to have any of the side effects mentioned above.
The FDA has also recommended that men who take Viagra should not take the erectile dysfunction drugs “in any way whatsoever”. Viagra, sold under brand names like Viagra, and the tablets are used to treat the most common sexual disorder in men: erectile dysfunction.
The FDA has not ruled out using the pills to treat other sexual disorders such as enlarged prostate, diabetes, and some types of cancer. The FDA recommends men who are experiencing erectile dysfunction not taking Viagra should seek help from a doctor first.
